President's Message

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County (JHSFC), I would like to thank you for your support during this very eventful year. A notable highlight was our Gala celebration of our 40th Anniversary on October 22nd, where we honored Elissa and David Kaplan with the 2023 Heritage Award and Sandy and Fred Golove with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The event drew more than 150 guests from the wider community.

On December 3rd, we hosted the Sixth Annual Norma and Milton Mann Lecture featuring Alan Cooperman, Director of Religion Research Center in Washington, DC. His presentation "Can Jews be the Most Loved and Hated Religious Group in America?" generated insightful discussions during a Donor Brunch and a filled Chapel.

Throughout the year, our community engaged with our Archives, our successful L’Dor V’Dor program involved over 200 children from six synagogues interviewing their grandparents, and we presented several screenings of "Remembering the Family Store", a documentary recounting the urbanization of Stamford circa 1940-1965. "It Happened Here!" travelling exhibit was shown at the Ferguson Library and at the Stamford Government Center, hosted by The Honorable Caroline Simmons, Mayor of Stamford.

Looking ahead to 2024, we plan to continue Archive visits, revive "Bissell Yiddish", expand L’Dor V’Dor to every synagogue in Fairfield County, and participate in the Connecticut CT250 project, funded by generous donations at the 40th Anniversary Gala. We hope you will join us at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 17th, will feature a program with Helane Rheingold speaking on "Christian Artists and their Take on narratives from the Jewish Bible".

Your generous support has been invaluable. I invite those who haven’t already to consider a year-end donation to the JHSFC. Thank you in advance for your ongoing commitment.

Sincerely,
Peter Lilienthal, President
