Dear Friends,
Please join us on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Congregation Agudath Sholom as we celebrate the 40th Anniversary
of the Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County,
a number of great significance in the history of the Jewish people
and for us marking four decades of the community telling its stories. Invitation to follow.
Who knew that when Irwin Miller, Ron Marcus, George Goldberg, Larry Ginsberg,
and Cherri Sherman had their first get togethers in 1983 with what was to be the
Stamford Jewish Historical Society that there would be a celebration of its founding 40 years later.
Much continues to happen. It has been more than two years since almost 200 middle school students have participated
in our L’Dor V’Dor initiative to connect generation to generation in six religious schools and Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy.
They have learned to capture oral histories by interviewing their grandparents! This program was conceived and
implemented by JHSFC volunteers and leaders.
More than 3,000 people have viewed the trailer for our original documentary – “Remembering the Family Store”.
and more than 1,200 people came to the Avon Theatre to watch the entire film. Preserving oral histories is time
intensive and important work. It was the vision and passion of Lester Sharlach z”l, our second
President’s slide show, that was the inspiration for the documentary.
“It Happened Here!”, a travelling exhibit first displayed at the Ferguson Library and then hosted by
Mayor Caroline Simmons at the Government Center, features selected images from the
JHSFC Archives and photos from primary sources. The exhibit will be shown elsewhere.
Please consider a gift to The Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County,
to help us with our most pressing needs.
